Trialled and tested: Ocean Tranquil is solid as ever

Ocean Tranquil had no trouble gaining his ticket back to the races with a strong win in smart time in the only barrier trial at Sha Tin yesterday.

Ocean Tranquil, ridden by Jacky Tong Chi-kit, travelled well within himself throughout the 1,050m heat on the all-weather track and stayed on the bridle for a half-length win over the Sha Tin 1,400m co-record holder, Flaming Lamborgini.

Ambitious General, runner-up in last year's Group One AJC Australian Derby in Sydney, stormed home from a clear last for third under Eric Saint-Martin, in a performance that strongly suggests he is starting to go the right way.

Ocean Tranquil was disappointing last start at Happy Valley, weakening to finish 11th of 12 runners in the Kwai Sing Handicap (1,200m). Although the chestnut was a market drifter from HK$40 to HK$70, he ran a long way below expectations and was ultimately beaten 12 1/2 lengths.

Stewards sought explanations from Caspar Fownes and jockey Zac Purton but they were unable to offer much of substance. Purton said his mount began well, felt unbalanced in his action making the first turn, then after entering the back straight changed stride on a number of occasions. The Australian rider said he rode his mount along to hold his position after the 800m but the gelding was reluctant to do so.

Purton told stewards the unsteady manner in which Ocean Tranquil was galloping led him to think that he may have bled. But when he did not see any blood, he began riding Ocean Tranquil along but still he did not respond to his riding.

Ambitious General finished eighth to Able One in the Premier Cup over 1,600m at Sha Tin 10 days ago, beaten 7 1/4 lengths.

The quality galloper was bought with this year's Hong Kong Derby in mind and, although he had not struck form at that stage, trainer David Hall should be pleased the rising five-year-old is now starting to adjust to his new environment.

Flaming Lamborgini was the least impressive of the three placegetters. He was ridden along strongly by Terry Wong Chi-wai and kept on at the one pace over the final 200m.
